MIDDLE EAST (SOUTHWESTERN ASIA) (+40 points)

I. Ingredient Investigation:
1. Watch Pantry Raid - Lentils - See MBC - Resources - Middle East/Africa
2. Investigate a common ingredient found in the Middle East.
3. Create a guide to the ingredient including:
  • The "origin" of the ingredient - is it native or was it brought from another region originally?
  • A description of the ingredient - how it's grown, harvested, what a "ready to use" item looks like
  • Preparation/processing that occurs
  • 3 authentic dish examples - with a recipe for ONE of the dishes
  • At least 5 pictures

OR

II. Dish It Up:
1. Describe 3 popular food dishes found in this region of the world.
2. Create a guide with the following information:
  • Description of each dish
  • Recipe for each dish
  • Role the dish plays in the diet - is it a common, everyday food, a holiday food, etc?
  • Description of the ingredients found in the dish
  • An explanation of the dish's "origins" - is it native or was it brought from another region?


AFRICA (+40 points)

I. Bizarre Foods:
1. Watch the Bizarre Foods Ethiopia episode. (see your teacher for the link)
2. Choose another country in Africa.
3. Create your own Bizarre Foods guide.
4. Minimum of 3 foods with a picture and a description of the food - ingredients and preparation
5. Minimum of 5 pictures

OR

II. Dish Comparison:
1. Find 2 typical main dish recipes from 2 different countries in Africa - 1 from North Africa and 1 from Sub-Saharan Africa.
2. Create a comparison chart that compares and contrasts these 2 recipes.
3. Identify the similarities and differences between the 2 recipes.
4. Identify the major agricultural products from these countries that are utilized in each recipe.
5. Minimum of 5 pictures
